And then he lived happily ever after. The end. …No? Okay. Panda was born the son of an Italian man and an Irish woman, who both had been living in California for some twenty-odd years. Neither of them had an outstanding job, and they weren’t too well off. So why would they want to have a baby? Truth is… they kind of didn’t. Panda was just a tiny little bit… of a mistake. But, his parents weren’t horrible people, they weren’t going to kill an unborn child or give him away; they didn’t believe in that. So, despite not being ready in any way for raising this baby, they kept little Panda. So, growing up, Panda’s clothes were all hand-me downs from family or patches of cloth sewn together by his mother, and his toys were old and broken and he didn’t have many. But he learned to be respect and grateful for what he did have, rather than whine and complain about what he didn’t. He also learned from his parents, his mother especially, how to be resourceful and use his surroundings to his benefit. He became very handy and found a love of creating things, so maybe some rocks and sticks were better than some wooden blocks and toy cars in the long run. Though, a lot of the other little kids would ask questions and poke at him because of his funny looking clothes, torn shoes, and the way he’d sort of stare in confusion when he saw an actual toy. That was one thing Panda never really learned how to deal with. Other people making fun of and questioning him. He didn’t like it, and sometimes he would react almost violently to it, but back then he still would never hurt anyone. And then when Panda was about six years old, his mother and father were both able to get a few paid days off and they went to visit his uncle, aunt and cousins. They lived in a cabin in some wooded area that Panda had never heard of and to this day couldn’t tell you where it had been, as they had only gone there once. The last day there they had all decided to go on a fishing trip, to a stream not so far from where they were. Panda, having his love for crafting tools, made a spear to use instead of borrowing a fishing pole from his relatives. He ignored everyone as they told him it wouldn’t work; the fish were too fast for him. He had stood on the other side of the stream while everyone else fished, watching carefully for a fish he could spear. When he finally was able to follow one with his eyes, he didn’t let it go for a very long time as it seemed to continuously move around the area they were fishing. And then it stopped for just a second, and Panda threw his spear as best he could, realizing as it left his hand that the little fish had swam right over his mother’s foot. His mother, still watching the fish that had just swum by, had no time to react as the spear went straight into her foot. And that’s when the first little split in Panda’s personality began… part of him was happy his spear had worked, not even caring that he’d just hurt his mother… yet the other part was completely horrified at what he’d done and distraught that he’d hurt his mother. The real downside to this in the family was, his mother was out of work for a few more days than had been expected, and was fired because her boss didn’t quite like her… and the intern was just better at the job. And now Panda was more responsible for the family’s financial worries than he had already been. He felt guilty more and more every day until his mother had found a new job, which had taken a few months. Of course, his parents didn’t blame him and his mother told him he didn’t have to keep saying sorry fifty times a day, but part of him was just riddled with guilt and he was constantly trying to think of ways to help his family get to a better place in life. But what could a little kid do? Not much. Though he one day got the idea to sell a bunch of drawings. He spent all his free time in school drawing odd little pictures, with crayons of course, and then after school went around selling them to people… and people bought them! They most likely thought he was an orphan though. It seemed like a brilliant idea at the time, but his mother made him give the money back when he got home and told her. She never really explained why he had to return the money, but it made Panda feel a bit useless. In school, he was a bit of an oddball. He was very friendly, but at the same time if you crossed him, he wouldn’t hesitate to viciously attack you. It was such a drastic change that some people would be in complete denial if another person told them Panda had beat them up. Because Panda was just so cute and innocent and scrawny and well… not very violent or threatening at all. But that was only because they hadn’t pushed the wrong buttons… The worst thing to do is to make fun of him because of how he dresses or how his family is. He doesn’t think it’s right for others to laugh at him just because him and his mother make his clothes from old cloth. He was also someone who was noted for getting a job as soon as he could. He was about eleven and he was allowed to get a paper route, which he was actually very happy about. He didn’t have a bike though, so he had to run the whole route, which meant getting up extra early… and he didn’t seem to mind that either. And life went on like that. He had his route, his mother had jobs on and off, and his father had his steady job repairing heaters and air conditioners. And everything was pretty much okay… until one more mistake came a-knockin’. His mother was, well… pregnant. Again. And his parents began stressing out over money… again. This was about a month ago, maybe two, maybe even three. Who knows. And Panda’s response to it… was to run away. He felt he was the reason for his family’s money problems, and he thought that maybe if he ran away, if he took care of himself, then his family would be a bit happier. His parents worried, of course they did, but Panda... despite his white hair… was pretty good at hiding. He found a way to blend in well, to stay away from people who would force him back. But out there, that split in his personality, the one that now was triggered by how people acted towards him… it grew just a little more. The outside world was tough, and it seemed to nurture that other side of them. The violent and angry side, the side he had just begun to refer to as “Angry Panda”. But after about a week or two, he was starting to feel hungry, tired, and just all around gross. And his first thought, was the school. He hadn’t been going since he’d run away, but he was still technically a student. And it was usually open afterhours for one thing or another; maybe there’d be food. But at least there’d be a bathroom. And maybe a place he could hide away and sleep in. So to the school he went. It seemed busier than he remembered, but maybe important things were going on that he’d forgotten about. Whatever the case, it wasn’t too hard to get just a little bit to eat, though it didn’t taste exactly good it was better than what he’d had in a good while, and he washed himself off using a sink somewhere. And the last thing he did was hide in a dark area; it might’ve been a closet but he was too tired to pay attention at that point. And he sat down, to sleep in the corner… and then the world crashed down around him. He wasn’t hurt, except a few scratches, but he was trapped in. And that was the bad part. He was claustrophobic and afraid of the dark. He didn’t know how long he was in there, but he found himself arguing with… himself… just about the entire time. He found the split had gone all the way, and was almost as scared of himself as he was of never getting out. He passed out from exhaustion eventually, and when he woke up he was in the hospital, with his mother and father there to yell at him. They were worried, they said. But he didn’t really hear it… all he heard was he was being yelled at… and he just about snapped, yelling right back in an angry and frustrated tone. The tone of his voice caused some passing by nurses to come in and restrain him before he could sit up. His parents were a bit concerned at his reaction to them, but once he calmed down they went on to punish him for worrying them so bad. Their punishment being his mother forcing him to work in a flower shop with her. And then perhaps the worst thing that could ever happen, happened. He was supposed to go to some kind of rich kid school? Were they serious? Of course, Panda was one hundred percent against this, as he found rich people to be the worst kind of people and hated them with an irrational passion. But he had to go… for his parents at least. He needed an education to get a good job after all… right?
