Boy met girl. Boy and girl grew up. Boy got girl pregnant. Boy went to visit his relatives in another state. Girl never saw boy again. Sad story? Eh. Lucas and his brother never had second thoughts about it growing up. Their mother never cried about it, at least not that they knew of. She was strong for them, and their grandma would watch over them while their mama worked on the farm their old man had abandoned along with them. And that was just how life was. They were told since they were born to roll with the punches. Growing up the first few years, there was a distinction between the two boys, despite them being twins. Lucas was the one climbing on everything, being a daredevil and running faster than they could catch him... and Jacob was the smarter one, learning how to talk, learning his shapes and his colors and all of that long before Lucas could even grasp the concepts. Family was the most important thing to them. And then one day, when the boys were five, old grandma passed on. No one to watch over them, to tell them stories, or to tell them to eat their vegetables. The boys and their mother cried for a whole day, and their mother was now worried about what to do. And little Lucas, not wanting anything bad to happen to their home or family, said that he and his brother would work on the farm with her, that way they'd get even more work done and she wouldn't need anyone to watch them. Jacob was a bit reluctant to the idea at first, but after lots of whining and begging from Lucas he agreed to the idea, and working on the farm became a family job. Though, Lucas did most of the work and his brother was a bit of a slacker. Then school began to pick up. Lucas was barely passing, while Jacob excelled. And that would always frustrate Lucas, especially because Jacob never helped him with their homework or with studying. The one thing Lucas was good at was sports. He wasn't the best, no, but he was good at just about all of them. So, while his brother spent his time being the smart one, Lucas was failing school while juggling sports and work, and he was happy that way. He liked the way his life was. And his life was that way for many, many years. And then one day he woke up. And Mama was gone. She was found dead, in her bed. One or two or ten too many pills. Jacob said it was on purpose, Lucas refuses to believe that and said it was an accident. She must have just forgot, that was all. But you know what happened to Thing One and Thing Two? Well, their old man is still out there. Guess who they were sent to? They were sent from their lovely little home, the one they'd lived in for fourteen years, to... Farlax. To live with some guy. Their father. But to them, he was just some guy. They'd never met him before; he was a stranger. But they were dumped right at his front door. And Lucas was disgusted by him immediately. He had plenty of money to throw around, apparently. He talked funny. He treated them like they were puppies or something. Supposed to do everything he said. In fact, the first thing he did was have them take a test, to see which one of them was smarter. Of course, Jacob scored much higher than Lucas, and so he was sent to the prep school, and Lucas was sent to the public school. And Lucas was pretty thankful for that, because it was bad enough just living with this guy. And then later that day he found out he had a sister, a half sister, and that her mother had died too. She was the same age as him and his brother, so really all that meant to Lucas and Jacob was that their old man had left them for a different family... how sweet. Jacob didn't like their sister, Katherine, but Lucas thought she was a good kid and the two became just about best friends. The best thing about her was she wasn't all girly. Lucas couldn't stand the sight of girly things, for whatever reason. She did have a pocketbook though... those were scary too. Just portals into god-knows-where... could keep a truck in those things. Him and his brother grew slowly apart though, and Lucas always had a worry in the back of his mind that he was losing his brother to this new world. He didn't like that, but he shook it off. He was confident in himself and in family. Nothing could go wrong that way. Nothing at all. And then after a few years, just about everything went wrong. It was just one day. Him and his sister after school, she wanted to try for the musical because she loved musicals... and he was there because she needed someone to cheer her on. And so he was. And everything was just fine! And then he watched as the building itself killed her. The world collapsed and took his sister with it. And a bunch of other people too. And for the first time in his life, the brave little daredevil child... was scared, indecisive and began to doubt himself, his choices and decisions and way of life. Had he done this? He could have talked her out of it, distracted her. He could have convinced her to go earlier, to go later, to go home right after. He could have... he couldn't have done anything, really. He lost his sister that day, but that wasn't all. Then his brother decided to live in the dorms at the prep school instead of with them. And with that... he lost everything that mattered most to him. He lost his family. His father had no reason to talk to him after that... he was just alone. He was no longer brave and self-confident. And he was no longer as happy, but no one could tell because that grin never left his face. Nobody had to know how much he was hurt. Nobody had to worry about it either. Nobody was getting that close to this cowboy ever again anyway. And the worst part about it all, was they had to rub it in his face by saying he had to attend the prep school now. He had to watch his brother not care. He had to walk right into hell. And all he could think about... was home.
