A land of the free and the home of the brave. But not a place of origin, at least for Wilhelmina. That would not arrive until much later down the line. Birthed into the middle class, she hails from Amsterdam, Nederland - the social hub of liberal, free-loving people of the world. Plus, the fact that it is the third happiest country in the world does not seem to shabby either. Wilhemina was born fourth out seven children - being the first of two girls. As her parents were too busy to take care of every single child, she was given off to her grandparents to make sure she had the attention she deserved. Her homelife while in the Netherlands was more than what one would hope. At her young age, she needed to be a mentor to her brothers between the fighting that they started. The punches she received from her brothers caused her to be resistant to any fights that had gone during school. Calm, cool, collected like the earth. However, with her sister, Annabelle, she was the role model - granted her little sister could not handle the boys and would always go running for the hills. At school there, she learned to keep in her space and not deal with the problems of others - until there were little grade school fights going round. (Thanks to her brothers, she arrived home with a black eye once. Besides schooling, she had only had one life-long interest that her parents (or in this case, grandparents) let her take part in. The Cycling Club, as known for the little kiddies at school, let her train her biking skills - her wanting to get further each time in a faster time. It was an inexpensive means to an activity and boosted fitness. When she had reached ten, she had made it towards the children’s division. Wilhelmina had managed to get third place out of fifty children participating that day. It fueled her passion for the sport more so than before. But that year was a heart breaker. The difference of cultures. Emigrating was the hardest decision her parents had made. Although there was the promise of an American dream, her parents had gotten on the wrong side of her family, and let us just say they were not the most peaceful ones. (Not with their drug crazed highs and the alcohol surging through their system.) Her father had insulted an aunt on his side which in turn sent her uncle after her family. A knife in hand towards her brother caused her mother to snap and wish to get out of their home in the Netherlands. And so it was that year, they left their home in Amsterdam towards Ellis Island in New York. Having lived in New York for six months, Minnie learned more English than she had back at home. But her accent remained strong with the ‘dah’ and ‘ja’. And learning the American system of things held her back in school - not only in the differences of the actual teaching, but the language barrier as well. Her English came along much better than her parents and older brothers, being able to carry on a conversation much longer. This also meant she served as a translator for her parents when they had to look for jobs until they learned enough English to get them by in the workplace. Six months was gone in a blink of an eye. Her father had rushed into the building they stayed at, announcing her had a promotion to an area in California. Wilhelmina was ecstatic at first until it meant leaving the friends she had just met at school, forcing her to make new ones at the start of the next school year. Moaning about it, she had no choice but to leave this new exciting area to California because of a job opportunity. Yet this job allowed her one great experience she never knew at her previous homes. Minnie was offered her own room. Not sharing with her sister or brothers, but her own. The eleven year old rejoiced as this fateful day occurred. In the room she would hold secrets of the boys she crushed on, the girls she would insist on bringing over. A normal life for a girl her age. Until the high school years. Two schools, one rivalry. Because of her parents thriftiness and not wanting to go to extreme measures, she was sent to McKinley. Reason: it was cheap with quality education. Prep School was far too expensive as they would not be able to afford anything past one child. Her brother, two years older, had gotten the privilege. But Minnie took this as an opprotunity. Yet the language still held her back, as several students would still laugh about how she would speak. Then junior year hit. That fateful day. Being a cyclist, Wilhelmina had decided to ride her bike that day during her leisure time, work done and over with. Her route consisted of picking up groceries, stopping in for her paycheck, and getting her brother from school - he helping out a teacher with god-knows-what. Whistling, she had gotten the first two items on her checklist. Done! But as she started pedaling towards the school, the ground shook. Being from a sea bordered country, her immediate reaction was fear. Minnie never knew what the shaking was until a woman explained what was going on. Still confused, she wondered what it.... A crash in town! Her head whipped towards the section of town it had come from. The direction of the school! Her brother! “Niek!!!” was the only word she could scream. Her little brother was there with a teacher. What would have happened to him. Mounted on her bike, she pedaled and pedaled as fast she could, wanting, needing, hoping to get towards the scene as quickly as possible. Police were covering the scene. Her eyes were open as wide could be. The school was down and people were being escorted out. But there was no sight of her brother. A medical personnel was holding a clipboard. Her voice quivered as she asked for her brother. The man had shaken his head, saying no such person was out or confirmed. Confirmed? Could he have been dead? Sitting outside the school, her life was soulless until her parents and other siblings (most of them) had shown up. Annabelle had the courage to ask about their brother again. But only would they talk to their parents. Her mother’s scream pierced anyone talking right now. Cursing in Dutch and some German, she did not cry. Mother would never cry until the denial passed over. Something that would never come. A baby that was jsut wondering somewhere. Dead. Little Niek was dead. How could he be dead? Racing towards school hoping... how could it happen... Damned life. How cruel could you be. Even after all the messages...her fists clenched. Even if he had passed on, Wilhelmina would give her all, just to satisfy the life little Niek should have seen.
