Her mother was an alcoholic, and because of the tough home life Ellie tried to stay away from 'home' as much as possible. It wasn't fun to take care of her violent, moody mother. Not that she didn't love her mother, but the older woman made life hard for her. It was worse when she found out her mother couldn't keep her job. Or when she brought home different 'guy friends'. Ellie went through public school, that shy little girl who wore the glasses and never uttered a syllable. Of course, this made it hard for her to have friends, but that was okay with Ellie. She felt embarrassed of her mother and home life. She didn't want classmates to find out about it. She quietly dealt with her mother's problems and raised herself. Surprisingly, she was doing a good job. Maybe it was because she wanted to please her teachers, and be a good girl. Her mother always said she was a good girl. By the time her high school years rolled around, some friends managed to open her up to find a sweet, story loving girl. They pretty much forced her, as good friends do sometimes, to get involved in theatre. Though she never landed a lead role or anything major, Theatre was a good outlet, and helped Ellie really find out who she was. She became more comfortable in her own skin, and when senior year rolled around, Ellie had gone from shy freshman to loud and proud theatre geek. Ellie graduated with honors from McKinley High, and had been accepted to a performing arts college in northern California. That summer she spent getting her mother into AA, securing a summer job, and preparing for the next step in life. Then the disaster struck her own high school. Luckily, it happened to be the day after she had gone back to visit, but as soon as she realized those were underclassmen she had joked with. Teachers she had gone to talk to. These people were her friends, 'family' and she had been stuck with her own special brand of grief and guilt. It took a while for her to come to terms with it, and still the shock comes back once in a while. She can get depressed, but Ellie wants to be there for those people who were hurt more than she was. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on sometimes, and she wanted to be that person. So much, in fact, that she postponed her college plans to help the community.
