His entire village was made up of shepherds like his father and hotel owners, all of whom nearly killed poor Callen from boredom. Of course, he would have never had admitted that to his parents or any of the teenagers he considered his friends, but it was true. Since Callen's father was a shepherd, that's what Callen was ever since he was old enough to walk out to the barn. However, he spent most of his time training the border collies his family owned and taking care of the little lambs that he found rather endearing. For ten years, Callen knew nothing but sheep herding and collie training. It was in his blood, passed down from all of the other Finns before him to his father and then to him, rather unfortunately. Secretly, Callen was constantly wishing that something dramatic would happen to their family. Something so incredible that none of them would ever be the same again. He could remember every night before he went to bed, he would say his prayers and make a wish on the Northern Lights in the sky just outside his bedroom window. The wish was always the same and went something along the lines of, "Please, who or what ever is out there listening to me, please let my life be more than that of shepherd's son." He stopped wishing when he was ten. He had gotten what he wished for. He had been tending to a pregnant ewe when he had received the news. His father had been returning home from another village when he suddenly lost control of his car. The officer at the scene said it had flipped four or five times before landing upside down. "Thankfully, he died instantly, so he suffered little pain." was what he remembered someone saying to him, trying to comfort him. Thankfully? Callen was far from thankful that his father was now dead. His mother and he tried to run the sheep farm by themselves, but three months in they had barely enough money to feed themselves, let alone their livestock. He and his mother sold their farm, packed up what little belongings they were permitted to take with them and hopped on a plane to California in the States. Callen had an aunt on his mother's side who lived in the small town of Farlax and welcomed them with open arms into her home. Callen couldn't help but blame himself for his father's death. He had wished for something to happen, hadn't he? Who or whatever had been listening to him on one of those nights and decided to play a cruel joke on the young boy. Callen was enrolled into McKinley Elementary immediately, despite the need for a necessary grieving period. Without any time to completely process the fact that his father no longer walked the face of the earth or deal with the sudden change in environment, the once bubbly and sociable Callen retreated inside himself, engulfed in his own depression. Because of this, Callen had very few friends throughout the rest of elementary school and middle school. His thick accent didn't help, either. He was always being teased and made fun of for the way he talked, so he simply stopped. He stopped talking in the middle of his sixth grade year and didn't speak another word until the end of his eighth grade year when he told a bully to "bolt" and that he was a "doss arse bandit." Of course, the kid just laughed and teased him more, but Callen just ignored him. When he reached high school, things seemed to be looking up for him. His mother pressed him into joining the book club which he eventually became the president of his junior year. In the same year he had become the chief editor of the school newspaper and their top journalist as well as gained a few close friends. Life was going the smoothest it had since that day when he was ten. Of course, who or whatever was still watching over Callen Finn, and the day that McKinley High collapsed changed the poor boy forever. He had been in the library that day, observing the Scholastic Decathlon for an article he would be writing for the paper that week. He had been leaning against one of the bookshelves when the ceiling collapsed, knocking the bookshelf and another on top of him. Thankfully, the only things that hit him were the books from the tipped shelves. The two heavy pieces of wood had made a small A-frame shelter for him. However, that didn't stop Callen from freaking out. He was inside the library beneath those bookshelves for nearly ten hours, holding his legs to his chest and shaking uncontrollably. He was never the same. He developed an extreme fear of tight, closed spaces, and no longer has the ability to be in a room with a large amount of people. Poor Callen can't even hug his own mother without having a violent panic attack. Callen is now attending Farlax Prep as one of the former McKinley students, more anxious and unsociable than he had been when his father first died.
